SJGS: Indians Win Physical Battle against Brebeuf

Ethan Fullenkamp, Reporter

On Saturday the Saint Joe girls soccer team continued their undefeated season  at home by beating Brebeuf in a 3-1 in their biggest test of the season. Indian goals were scored by  juniors Alexis Mansfield, Ella Scott, and senior Natalie Moore.

The physical game kicked off as the Indians got off to a slow start falling down 1-0 at the 13th minute mark, as goalkeeper Hannah O’Connell and the lady defense allowed their first goal of the season. The team bounced right back to tie up the score 1-1 after a corner kick led to a goal by Alexis Mansfield in the 31st minute. Both defenses stiffened for the remainder of the first half to go into halftime tied at 1-1.

The ladies focused up at halftime with a goal off the kickoff in the first 15 seconds of the second half. Ella Scott crossed the ball to Natalie Moore who one-timed the ball into the back of the net to put Saint Joe up 2-1. The physicality of the game continued as both teams were receiving fouls, and a Brebeuf player received a yellow card. The battle continued until the 67th minute when Ella Scott ripped a shot from 25 yards out that hit the crossbar and went in to put the Indians up 3-1.

Shortly after the Indian goal the same Brebeuf midfielder received her second yellow card and their team finished the game down a player. I caught up with senior Sarah Hiestand to talk about their big win, “We knew coming into the game it was going to be a battle. Once they scored the first (goal) we responded really well in the next 5 minutes. I’m really proud of our team and how we fought through adversity  and came on top of our biggest test so far this season.” With the win the girls improved to 10-0 on the season.

The girls look to keep their undefeated season going with a game at John Glenn on Monday, September 21st at 6:00  and a huge home game against their rival Penn on Wednesday, September 23rd at 7:00.
