“Phineas and Ferb” Review

John Bossler, Staff Writer

“Phineas and Ferb” follows the title characters, Phineas Flynn and Ferb Fletcher, through their endless summer in Danville.  They spend their summer building enormous attractions including: a game show, an aquarium, a roller coaster, a carnival ride, a jello pool, a water park, and so many more.  Their inventiveness drives their nosey sister, Candice, insane.  She spends the summer trying to “bust” her little brothers because of their gigantic creations.  My favorite character is Perry the Platypus.  He doubles as a typical house pet and a secret agent.  His mission: take down Dr. Doofenshmirtz, the antagonist in the series.  Dr. Doofenshmirtz invents his “inators.”  The purpose is to destroy various things in the tri-state area.

Personally, I like this show.  The music that makes appearances throughout the series is fun and helps the show flow.  I think the most memorable song is “Busted” sung by Candice and Dr. Doofenshmirtz’s daughter, Vanessa.  I learned a lot of things from the songs too.  Did you know that the little plastic thing at the end of shoe laces is called an aglet?  You would if you had listened to the song “A-G-L-E-T.”  There are also funny songs.  My personal favorite is “S.I.M.P (Squirrels in my Pants) which follows the unfortunate event of squirrels getting stuck in Candice’s pants.

Honestly, Candice’s mission to “bust” her little brothers is kind of sad.  She never succeeds.  Whenever they make something big in their backyard, her mother never gets home in time to see it.  You almost start to feel bad for her, but her journey becomes kind of annoying throughout the show.  I started to think “just let the kids have fun.”  Phineas and Ferb never let it bother them, but as an audience member, I thought it became annoying.

Something that tripped me up was the shape of the characters.  Phineas has a triangular head with bright red hair.  Ferb has a long head with bright green hair.  Candice has a long neck with red hair.  Perry is a platypus so he is shaped like a platypus, but he’s turquoise.  The shape of the characters doesn’t really have any effect on the plot of the show.

“Phineas and Ferb” is available to stream on Disney +.
