As the school year starts to get underway, the Saint Joe Theatre department prepares for their fall play; 12 Angry Jurors. Coming off of last year’s Shakespeare comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream this show is a step in a more serious direction for the department.
As director Mr.Reynolds puts it, “It’s going to give us an opportunity to be a little bit different from the comedies that we’ve been in these last couple of years. I’m really excited for the opportunities for our theatre friends to develop their skills.”
An adaptation of the classic teleplay 12 Angry Men, the more modern 12 Angry Jurors allows for a more diverse and flexible cast while staying true to the original play and film. The show takes place in a single room where 12 people struggle in deciding the life or death of a young man on trial and the unraveling of their own minds as they contemplate and fight each other to get to the bottom of this man’s guilt.
“The show contemplates the real mortality facing a person that is put on trial for a crime and the real life consequences”, says Reynolds, “It starts off with an almost unanimous verdict of guilt but then slowly throughout this play we start to uncover more and more which leads us to the question of, is this person really that guilty or are they innocent after all?”
Each juror has a unique mindset and personality that all meld together and clash against each other and bring to light every part of the story in a very intricate way, making the show not only entertaining but also extremely thought provoking as the audience can connect to different aspects of each character and come to their own conclusions along with the jurors. Auditions take place August 30th and 31st and the show comes to Washington Hall late October after a month and a half of rehearsals.
Reynolds and the theatre department are very excited for this show and hope for people to mark their calendars for October 19th and 20th.
