Someone in our school holds a dark secret. He has been among our faculty for 34 years and has one of the most impressive quiz bowl moderator resumes of all time. He attended Purdue University and was Academic Vice Principal for our last academic school year. It is Mr. Ben Dillon! He holds within him the secret practices of a Star Trek fanatic.
Mr. Dillon holds a grand legacy at Saint Joseph High School, graduating himself in 1986. He then proceeded to attend Purdue University and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and a minor in education. Mr. Dillon then returned to Saint Joe after graduating from Purdue to be a math teacher.
In his extensive career as a Saint Joe educator, Mr. Dillon taught students such as Pete Buttigieg class of 2000. Buttigieg was a presidential candidate for the 2020 election and is the current Secretary of Transportation. Another student of note was Paul Appleby now an illustrious opera singer.
Both of these students were enrolled in Mr. Dillon’s favorite class to teach: Trigonometry/Precalculus Honors. However, this was not Mr. Dillon’s favorite class as a high school student. His favorite class was Geometry Honors. He entered the 3rd Quarter with a F as a grade and worked his way all the way back up to an A by the end of the quarter. His least favorite class was Physical Education where he remembers the horrors of climbing the rope to the ceiling.
If Mr. Dillon was able to teach any class in the building, he would teach a grammar course. Unsurprisingly, if any course was offered to take, Mr. Dillon would be enrolled in a Star Trek course. Mr. Dillon loves his Star Trek, but he loves his students even more.
