This past weekend, the Saint Joe Huskies travelled down to Indianapolis to compete two athletes in the Indoor Track State Finals. Brady Farrell competed in the pole vault, and Luke Kaufhold competed in the 60m hurdles.
The two State qualifiers have worked hard thus far in the season, representing two of the most technical events in track and field. With a very competitive field in all events from all across Indiana, making it to the State Finals is an impressive accomplishment.
The Huskies’ results are nothing to shrug at, either. Both athletes competed to the best of their ability– Luke earned a new personal best of 8.29 seconds (an improvement from 8.31), and Brady tied his personal best, vaulting 13 feet, 6 inches. Both Huskies landed just shy of the podium in their respective events: 9th place for Luke, and 12th for Brady.
Arguably just as impressive as the performances was the venue itself. The event was held at the Fall Creek Pavilion at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis. Construction of the venue was only finished in July of 2023, and, with 196,000 square feet, was an enjoyable experience for athletes who had abundant space to warm up and practice.
The venue also provided a generous amount of natural light and lots of space for spectators, a pleasant turnaround from many venues from previous weeks’ competitions. Of all the places to watch a 5 hour track meet, the Pavilion is as good as you can get.
As the boys enjoy their experience making it to Indoor State, outdoor season officially begins. The weather gets warmer, competition gets tougher, and the reward of making it to State again becomes more alluring for all aspiring athletes. Only one thing is guaranteed: the Huskies are hungry for more.
