What is Quiz Bowl and why should you watch it? Well, if you enjoy trivia games like Jeopardy or want to do something with all the rotting esoteric knowledge in your brain, this is the competition for you?
A quiz bowl match has three rounds. One buzz-in round, where a question is read and the first person to has a chance to answer it, even if the question isn’t completed. The second is a team lightning round, where the trailing team is read multiple subjects, then has one minute to answer ten questions related to the topic. Then, the other team gets to answer any questions the team on the clock missed. The teams then swap, then rinse and repeat Finally, there is a buzz-in with bonuses round, where the person who gets the main question correct gets to answer three bonus questions, which can gain them a significant amount of extra points. The JV matches have eight questions in the first and third rounds, and all questions are worth ten points. Varsity matches have ten questions in each round, and if a question is answered quick enough, then can get a five point bonus if correct, but a five point deduction if incorrect. Now that you know how it works, here is why you should watch it this year.
Saint Joe has had a historic success at Quiz Bowl before, and recently, the current team is no exception. This year, the SJHS Quiz Bowl Team is primed for success. Coming off a JV win at regionals, and a successful run at Nationals and state for both JV and Varsity, their potential this year is extremely good. As the former JV sophomores, two of which are Andy Sorg and Joseph Neeser, are now taking larger roles in the Varsity team, with proven senior veterans Theodore Berente and Cormac Kennedy, new talented sophomores, some of which are John Morin, Tyler Tubbs, and Lia Bayugo are stepping up to lead the JV team to another successful season. With the upcoming addition of new freshmen, both teams are going to be exciting this year. Matches tend to be on Wednesdays, and while home matches can be uncommon, the will be announced on (shockingly) the announcements the day of. Overall, you should come to Quiz Bowl matches this year because the teams are going to be extremely good this year, and will put up quite the show.
