St. Joe made it to the state finals for the first time since 2016, ending with an impressive 18-2 record. The No. 15 Huskies had an incredible upset win against No. 5 Columbus North, 3-2, for the North Central High School quarterfinal match in Indianapolis.
“It was not a magical run. It was the result of all the hard work and practice that the team put in, and the determination that we will keep going,” said Varsity Doubles Nick Nguyen after the state finals. He went on to say, “This was a very well-bonded team. We were all very close to each other, and that definitely made us fight more for those wins.” The team put on a show, and although they lost to the state’s top-ranked team, Brebeuf, the team’s chemistry and grit is undeniable.
Varsity Seniors Jake Westberry, Cormac Kennedy, and Nick Nguyen gave it their all. Ending their careers with Saint Joe, their mark on the court is inspiring.
Sophomore Jacob Hix, Northern Indiana Conference MVP, will keep the Huskies tennis streak strong. Both brothers, Jacob and Oliver Hix, play the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spots, respectively. Considering the brothers are underclassmen, it’s just a matter of time before Saint Joe Tennis gets their first state win. Coach Halfpenny has transformed the game with his one tennis season with us, and we can’t wait to see what he has in store.
