It’s February, which means the Super Bowl (49ers or Chiefs?), Groundhog Day (six more weeks of winter or an early spring?) and Valentine’s Day! It’s time for the red roses, candy hearts, cheap teddy bears, cringy pick up lines, and heart-shaped Chik-fil-A trays of chicken to come out of hiding. But do you want to feel even more in the spirit of love? Well, grab a slice of hopeless romantic pie and cozy up to The Do-Over by Lynn Painter.
Painter’s young-adult romance novel centers on 16-year old Emilie Hornby on the worst February 14th of her life. She begins the morning hopeful for what’s to come and is excited to soak in the day of love. Most importantly, she’s thrilled to be in love on the day of love. But, her bliss doesn’t last long, as small annoying events snowball into catastrophe. From one of which being a car crash with her quiet and brooding chemistry partner, Nick; another being the loss of an important summer internship; to seeing her boyfriend, Josh, cheat on her; this day cannot seem to get any worse. When this long, terrible Valentine’s Day eventually comes to an end, Emilie is thankful to leave the day behind. But when she wakes up the next morning? It’s February 14th, again.
Although an easy, light read with some guessable plot points, this Ground-hog Day meets Ferris Bueller’s Day Off novel had me locked from the start. Painter adds in her comedic flair to every page and it’s just a cute, cheesy, light-hearted novel from start to finish. It gets 5 stars from me, and I would definitely recommend if you’re looking for something easy but sweet to read.
